Several arms caches destroyed in Chechnya

GROZNY. Nov 29 (Interfax-AVN) - Several arms caches have been exposed in the Nozhai-Yurt, Shelkovskaya and other districts of Chechnya, a spokesman for the Federal Security Service (FSB) department for Chechnya said on Friday.

Participants in a search operation found a cache on the territory of the former Edelveis pioneer camp near the Chechen- Aul village, the spokesman told Interfax-Military News Agency. The cache contained 15 electric detonators, two radio sets, arms and other equipment.

Agents of the FSB department in the Nozhai-Yurt district in cooperation with district police and riot police officers seized equipment for making a landmine and three RGD-5 grenades from a cache on the outskirts of the Sogunty village. The ammunition was destroyed on the spot, the regional FSB department's public relations group said.

Arms caches were found and destroyed during special pin- point operations in the Shelkovskaya district and in the Oktyabrsky district of Grozny. Measures are being taken to detect and detain people engaged in setting up the caches, the temporary press center of the Interior Ministry grouping in the North Caucasus said.

"A joint operations team of the FSB department and regional police department detained a resident of the Shelkovskaya district during a special pin-point operation. An RGD-5 grenade, a metal box with a home-made explosive device and a detonator, 7.62mm cartridges and a substance resembling raw opium were seized from the detainee's house. All aspects of the case are being checked to decide whether it is necessary to open a criminal case," the public relations group told Interfax-AVN.
