Georgian parliament vice speaker calls to prevent guerillas' return to Pankisi gorge

TBILISI. Dec 4 (Interfax-AVN) - Deputy Speaker of Georgian Parliament Vakhtang Rcheulishvili called on law-enforcement agencies to do their best to prevent the return of Chechen guerillas to the Pankisi gorge.

"Chechen refugees such as women and children may stay in Georgia but no guerilla should be here. It is necessary to rule out the return of those who have left the Pankisi gorge, and if there are still rebels in Georgia, they must be detained and handed over to Russia," Rcheulishvili told Interfax-Military News Agency on Wednesday.

He said that the so-called Ichkerian mission in Tbilisi has effectively been shut down, for which he had called a lot.

In response Russia should close the Abkhaz mission in Moscow as a goodwill act, Rcheulishvili noted.

It is needed to extradite armed Chechens detained on the border in August, but only if Russia provides legal backing for its demands, Rcheulishvili stressed.

He added that Russian authorities should do the same with Igor Georgadze, former chief of the Georgian special service, charged with attempting on the Georgian president in 1995. Georgadze is declared wanted by Georgia.
