CIA attempt to acquire classified Russian military data prevented - FSB chief

MOSCOW. Dec 15 (Interfax-AVN) - Federal Security Service (FSB) chief Nikolai Patrushev said that a U.S. Central Intelligence Agency attempt to obtain classified information about Russia's advanced weapons programs and the country's defense contacts with the CIS was thwarted in 2002.

"We have prevented a heavy blow from being delivered to Russia's defense capabilities and security," Patrushev said at a meeting with heads of the Interfax, ITAR-TASS and Ria-Novosti news agencies and the ORT and RTR television stations.

"The third secretary of the U.S. Embassy's consulate department was expelled from the country for activities inconsistent with the official's diplomatic status," the FSB chief said. "Two Russian citizens were detained on charges of high treason. One of them has been given a prison sentence."
