Peacekeeping chief calls for stepping up law-enforcement activity in South Ossetia

TBILISI. Dec 16 (Interfax-AVN) - Commander of the Mixed Peacekeeping Forces in the Georgian-Ossetian conflict zone Major General Svyatoslav Nabzdorov will call for stepping up the work of law-enforcement agencies at the next leg of the conflicting parties' negotiations that is to take place in the South Ossetian capital of Tskhinvali.

"The criminal situation in the conflict zone is complicated, that is why it is necessary to discuss the work of law- enforcement agencies in detail at the session of the Mixed Control Commission in Tskhinvali on Friday and Saturday, for the work leaves much to be desired," Nabzdorov told Interfax-Military News Agency.

At the same time, participants in the session are not going to discuss the establishment of additional peacekeeping posts in the forces' area of responsibility.

"Peacekeepers and law-enforcement agencies should cooperate closer, and such a cooperation will be established with the course of time," Nabzdorov said.

After the session, the commander will visit Tbilisi to brief Georgian officials on his proposals related to peacekeeping measures in the conflict zone.

The Mixed Peacekeeping Forces were deployed to the Georgian- Ossetian conflict zone in 1992. The forces number about 1,000 servicemen.
