Russia invited to participate in NATO exercises in Georgia

TBILISI. Dec 17 (Interfax-AVN) - Chief-of-Staff of the Georgian Armed Forces Dzhoni Pirtskhalaishvili has invited his Russian counterpart Anatoly Kvashnin to take part in the Rescuer/Medceur-2003 military exercises under the NATO program Partnership For Peace.

Interfax-Military News Agency obtained this information from chief of the Partnership For Peace coordinating staff of the Georgian General Staff Irakly Batkuashvili on Tuesday.

The exercises should begin in Vaziani, the former location of a Russian military base, on May 15, 2003, Batkuashvili said.

The second conference on planning the exercises will take place in Tbilisi in mid-January.

The first conference took place in Tbilisi in October, the third and final one will be held in Great Britain in March.

Rescuer/Medceur-2003 are Georgian-American exercises to which representatives from a number of countries of the region will be invited, Batkuashvili said.

"Armenia, Azerbaijan, Germany, Ukraine and Bulgaria have confirmed their participation," he added.

"First, a two-week military medical exercise will be held. It will be followed by a two-week computerized command post exercise in interaction in crisis situations, for instance, in tectogenic disasters," the official stressed.
