Some 30% of housing fund in Russian armed forces demands urgent repairs - source

MOSCOW. Dec 25 (Interfax-AVN) - Some 30% of the housing fund in the Russian armed forces has been in use for over 50 years and needs urgent repairs and restoration, a competent source in the Defense Ministry told Interfax-Military News Agency on Wednesday.

"The Defense Ministry recently submitted precise data on the amount and technical conditions of the armed forces housing fund to the Russian government. The data shows that some 30% of the fund is worn out and urgent repairs are needed to restore it. 50% more has being used for over 20 years and demands selective capital repairs," the source said.

He stressed that "the number of worn out installations increases by 4% annually." "The most complicated situation is in the Navy and Air Force, as well as in the Far Eastern, Siberian and Leningrad military districts, where 30-40% of buildings demand repairs and restoration," he said.

"The Defense Ministry is instructed to team up with other interested agencies to submit to the government specific proposals on measures for the housing fund restoration and rational use of infrastructure in military units in early 2003," the source noted.
