U.S. instructors to start training Georgian anti-terrorist battalion on Jan 16

TBILISI. Dec 27 (Interfax-AVN) - American instructors will start training the second of four anti-terrorist battalions of the Georgian Armed Forces at Krtsanisi test range near Tbilisi on January 16.

"The formation of the battalion has been completed. Over 500 soldiers and officers have been selected and the Defense Ministry will sign contacts with them," press secretary of the Defense Minister Nino Sturua told Interfax-Military News Agency on Friday.

U.S. marines will act as instructors, she said.

Georgian anti-terrorist units are being trained in the framework of the Train and Equip program that is to round up by the end of 2003, Sturua said.

The training of the first battalion has ended this month.
