Russian border guards seize over 12,000t of poached seafood this year

MOSCOW. Dec 27 (Interfax-AVN) - Russian border guards have seized over 12,000t of poached seafood this year, the press center of the Federal Border Guard Service reported on Friday.

The service's naval guard units have checked over 18,000 vessels in territorial waters and Russia's economic zone this year.

During the past 24 hours, border guards have checked 47 vessels and detained one of them. The Miya fishing schooner hailing from the town of Nevelsk was detained in the Tatarsky Strait in the Far East. Border guards found over 400 crabs aboard the ship, while the vessel did not have fishing documents. "The violator vessel was escorted to Nevelsk for subsequent investigation," the press center said.

Border guards and customs officers have also detained over 243kg of drugs at checkpoints this year.

The latest seizure took place at the Iletsk terminal in the Orenburg region on Thursday. Border guards and policemen found a pack with 1kg of heroin in the Tashkent-Moscow train. Several Uzbek citizens suspected of illegal transportation of drugs were detained. The investigation is underway.
