Russia, Armenia upbeat about political, military ties

MOSCOW. Jan 17 (Interfax-AVN) - Russia and Armenia are satisfied with the current level of political and military ties and stressed the need to further expand them, "including closer ties in the military- technical sphere."

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Armenian President Robert Kocharian signed a pertinent statement on Friday.

Peace and security in the Caucasus can be strengthened via the "cooperation of all countries in the region," the statement reads.

Moscow and Yerevan welcome the international community's initiatives to enhance the atmosphere of trust, mutual understanding and cooperation in the region, the statement reads.

Both countries hailed global efforts for eradicating cross- border organized crime, drug trafficking, illegal trade in arms and human beings, as well as money laundering.

The statement emphasizes the benefits of multilateral ties in the political, economic, diplomatic and law enforcement spheres.

Russia and Armenia are prepared to continue cooperation on a bilateral and multilateral basis. The Collective Security Treaty and the CIS Anti-Terrorism Center are of particular importance in the sphere, the statement reads.

"The United Nations and its Security Council should play the central coordinating role" in eradicating terrorism worldwide, the statement reads.
