GROZNY. Jan 24 (Interfax-AVN) - Three Chechen guerillas have laid down arms voluntarily and surrendered to federal forces.
A guerilla surrendered to federal authorities in the Avtury village of the Shali district, a source in Chechen law- enforcement agencies told Interfax-Military News Agency on Friday. The guerilla said that he was forced to join a Wahhabi jamaat in summer last year. The jamaat was led by Shamsudi Sapiyev, who was killed on January 3, 2003.
The guerilla gave up a Hungary-made pistol with cartridges. As it was his voluntary decision to surrender, the decision has been made not to launch a criminal case against the man.
A resident of the Ishcherskaya village in the Naurskaya district surrendered and gave up a Kalashnikov assault rifle with cartridges.
A similar case took place in the Nozhai-Yurt district of the troubled republic where a former member of warlord Shamil Basayev's gang surrendered to authorities and revealed the location of an ammo cache that contained three 152mm artillery shells, antipersonnel mines and grenade launcher rounds.
In addition, a rebel was killed as a result of using the Antiterrorist electronic system in the Vedeno district of Chechnya.
"Reconnaissance and search parties combing the area 1km north of the Vedeno locality after the Antiterrorist system went off found the site of a landmine blast site. Human remains, components of a makeshift explosive device with scrap wires, as well as fragments of radio station were found in the crater," the source said.
The Antiterrorist system eliminates a radio-controlled explosive device as soon as it is set acock.
