Three Pacific Fleet servicemen sentenced for theft of explosives

VLADIVOSTOK. Feb 6 (Interfax-AVN) - Three servicemen of the Pacific Fleet have been given prison sentences for the theft of explosives, a source in the fleet headquarters told Interfax- Military News Agency on Thursday.

"The garrison court of the town of Fokino in the Maritime Territory completed the trial of three servicemen who were charged with illegal sale and transportation of explosives. Senior Lieutenant Trunin was sentenced to five years in prison, and Warrant Officers Gasanov and Meshkov to six and two years respectively," the source said.

The criminals were detained over two years ago, when they were handing over a new batch of explosives stolen from a military storehouse.

Military counterintelligence agents and officials of the military prosecutor's office of the Fokino garrison seized 14kg of TNT and six electric detonators from the detainees. After their arrest, it was found out that the chief of a military unit's storehouse located in the Dunai village was among the organizers of the thefts. A cache containing over 2,000 electric detonators and 375kg of TNT was found at his place. Investigators found out that the explosives were intended for sale to criminal groups of Vladivostok and Nakhodka, the source noted.

According to him, sailors and officers were involved in the thefts.
