Moscow, Islamabad confirm adherence to non-proliferation - joint statement

MOSCOW. Feb 6 (Interfax-AVN) - Russia and Pakistan have reaffirmed their pledge of close bilateral and multilateral cooperation in strategic stability.

"Pakistan welcomed the signing of the Russian-U.S. Strategic Offensive Reductions Treaty. The sides confirmed their adherence to disarmament principles, non-proliferation and further strengthening of national exports control systems," says a joint statement signed on the results of the visit of Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf and his negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The statement is available on www.kremlin.ru. It notes that an important condition of stronger strategic stability is the prevention of an arms race in space.

Special significance is attributed to the consultative mechanism of the Russian-Pakistani group on strategic stability, which held its first session in Moscow in January 2003.
