MOSCOW. Feb 13 (Interfax-AVN) - The environmental consequences of a possible war in Iraq will be extremely negative, chief of the Russian armed forces environmental security service Major General Alevtin Yunak told the press on Thursday.
"Based on the record of the 1991-1992 Gulf War, you can assume that environmental consequences of the war against Iraq, which is being planned by the U.S., will be extremely negative," Yunak said.
The Russian armed forces environmental security service is estimating the possible consequences of a war against Iraq, he said.
"Based on (what happened during) the 1991-1992 Gulf War, one can presume that munitions containing depleted uranium will be used again. One can also anticipate that delivering strikes on Iraqi oil wells will significantly pollute the environment, including the atmosphere, due to burning oil wells," Yunak said.
