Russian railroad troops getting ready to reconstruct Abkhaz sector of Georgian railroad

MOSCOW. March 3 (Interfax-AVN) - The Russian Federal Railroad Troops Service is getting ready to reconstruct a 314- kilometer sector of the Abkhaz railroad that connects Russia to Georgia.

At the instruction of the Russian government, on March 1, the Railroad Troops began considering the reconstruction of the Abkhaz sector of the Georgian railroad, which was ruined in the armed conflict of the early 1990s, a source in the federal service told Interfax-Military News Agency on Monday.

"The scale of future repairs of the railroad is being estimated by documents and maps, and means necessary for the reconstruction of ruined bridges and other railroad infrastructure are being evaluated," he said.

A large volume of mine-clearance work will be performed on the railroad and in adjacent areas simultaneously with the restoration process.

"If a political decision coordinated with Georgia and Abkhazia is made to this effect, restoration work on this section will involve a detached railway brigade headquartered in the city of Krasnodar (and led by Colonel Alexander Burdakov)," the source added.
