Chechen rebels attack Argun interior department

GROZNY. March 3 (Interfax-AVN) - Rebels have attacked an interior department in Chechnya's Argun, Colonel Ilya Shabalkin, a spokesman for the regional headquarters of the anti-guerilla operation in the North Caucasus, told Interfax on Monday.

Shabalkin said that Interior Ministry units were immediately dispatched to the scene.

He said five rebels were killed and another two wounded. The wounded rebels were taken to the hospital under escort.

He stressed that the assailants are being identified. Policemen are also examining their possible role in other crimes.

The Chechen administration told Interfax earlier that in a separate incident, security officers guarding the administration's chief killed three rebels and detained another three in Argun.
