MOSCOW. March 3 (Interfax-AVN) - A total of 110 people died in emergencies and 1,870 burned in man-made fires in Russia in February, the Emergencies Ministry's information and PR department reported on Monday.
"110 people died in 64 emergencies in Russia in February. Moreover, 1,870 persons burned in man-made fires," the department said.
According to initial estimates, damage from those emergencies amounts to RUB23m (USD728,771).
"A gas blast in a residential house in the town of Yoshkar- Ola and a derailment near the Kholbon terminal in the Chita region were February's largest emergencies," the department reported.
As many as 16,000 man-made fires, including 88 large-scale ones, took place in the country last month. As a result, 1,870 people died and 1,156 got injuries and traumas.
Rescuers and firemen of the ministry saved 6,510 people and materiel worth over RUB4.2bn (USD133.07m).
Large-scale fires causing human deaths and material damage took place in the Udmurtian autonomous republic, the Ivanovo, Nizhny Novgorod, Moscow, Orenburg and Chelyabinsk regions, and in the city of St. Petersburg.
