Russian diplomat, Abkhaz PM discuss Georgian-Abkhaz settlement

MOSCOW. March 13 (Interfax-AVN) - Valery Loshchinin, the Russian president's special envoy for Georgian-Abkhaz settlement issues and state secretary and first deputy foreign minister of Russia, and Gennady Gagulia, prime minister of the unrecognized republic of Abkhazia, discussed specific aspects of a Georgian- Abkhaz settlement at a meeting on Wednesday.

These aspects were also the focus of talks between Russian and Georgian presidents Vladimir Putin and Eduard Shevardnadze in Sochi on March 6-7. Gagulia was also present at the Sochi talks.

Gagulia confirmed Abkhazia's basic readiness to search for mutually acceptable solutions concerning the reopening of Sochi- Tbilisi railway service, upgrading the Inguri hydro power station, carrying out joint economic projects, and bringing refugees back to the Gal region.

Also, according to a Russian Foreign Ministry report, the parties underscored the need to coordinate measures to guarantee security, especially in the Gal region and the Kodori Gorge.

Russia noted the importance of the early formation of authoritative and competent working groups or commissions that will concentrate on the issues addressed at the Sochi summit.
