MOSCOW. March 14 (Interfax-AVN) - The Russian Prosecutor General's office has detained the main suspected organizer of the act of terrorism carried out at the Chechen government building in Grozny at the end of 2002.
"We have detained and arrested the fourth participant in the crime, whom we regard as the main organizer of this act of terrorism," Deputy Prosecutor General Sergei Fridinsky told Interfax on Friday.
He quoted investigators as saying the detainee belonged to a group under the control of field commander Shamil Basayev.
Fridinsky said this confirms the scenario that Basayev was the main contractor of the crime. Basayev spoke to that end himself earlier. "Few rebels in Chechnya are not subordinate to Basayev or (separatist leader Aslan) Maskhadov, thus their involvement in such acts of terrorism is never ruled out," he said.
