Russian Defense Ministry sets up commission to cope with upcoming floods

MOSCOW. April 3 (Interfax-AVN) - The Russian Defense Ministry has set up an anti-flood commission to prevent possible flooding of barracks and other military installations, a source in the ministry told Interfax-Military News Agency on Thursday.

"An anti-flood commission has been established in the Defense Ministry to prevent emergency situations during floods and to ensure security of engineering installations and barracks," the source said.

"The commission's leaders are to make daily personal reports to the defense minister on all measures they have taken," he noted. Colonel General Viktor Vlasov, head of the Defense Ministry main housing operations department, is appointed chief of the commission.

"The commission is ordered to interact with other bodies, including the Russian Hydro-Meteorological Service and Emergencies Ministry, to determine possible flooding areas, work out anti-flood measures, and reinforce laboratory control over the quality of water obtained from both own water intakes and municipal water supplies," the source said.

Commission members are to create a reserve of material and technical assets and equipment resources for coping timely with possible emergency situations and breakdowns during the flood season, the source noted.

He added that the commission is instructed to ensure readiness of emergency repair brigades, vehicles and technical assets and reliable functioning of communication assets in case of emergency situations.
