VLADIKAVKAZ. April 4 (Interfax-South) - Officers from the North Ossetian department of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) carried out a special operation and discovered a cache holding about 10 tonnes of munitions.
The weapons were stored in a transformer vault of the Ossetia sanatorium, which has been closed over the past several years, the FSB department told Interfax.
The arsenal's owners left two fused projectiles, which might have served as a trap for anyone who found the cache, the department said. FSB explosives experts neutralized the projectiles.
The cache held a large amount of ammunition for automatic and large-caliber weapons, various types of grenade launcher rounds, and projectiles. The FSB department said this was the first time that such a large amount of illegally stored munitions was discovered.
Judging by markings, the munitions were stolen from various military units located in the North Caucasus.
Intelligence information indicates that the cache was several times relocated, as the owners were looking for channels to sell the munitions.
