Belarussian president, Russian minister discuss security

MINSK. April 4 (Interfax-West) - Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko and Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov at their Friday meeting in Minsk discussed security guarantees for the Russia-Belarus union.

"Such a system of international security should be developed today that would permit settling conflicts in a normal, civilized way," Ivanov said.

He added there are no problems in cooperation between the defense ministries of the two countries.

Ivanov said the joint meetings of the defense ministries' boards are expected to discuss questions of harmonizing legislation in Russia and Belarus. He specified that laws on the social security of servicemen would be in question.

"The world today is unstable and we must guarantee the security of our countries and take care of our peoples," Lukashenko said.

Ivanov came to Minsk for a one-day meeting of the Defense Ministries' boards.
