TBILISI. April 9 (Interfax-AVN) - Georgian law-enforcement agencies are carefully following the development of government crisis in Abkhazia being ready to take measures to ensure security of the country.
"Law-enforcement agencies, in particular, the Georgian Defense Ministry, understand that the government crisis in Sukhumi might lead to military excesses and carefully follow the situation in the Abkhaz region. Any adverse actions of separatists will be immediately stopped," Deputy Defense Minister Gela Bezhuashvili told Interfax-Military News Agency on Wednesday.
The Abkhaz government handed in its resignation on Tuesday under pressure from opposition which was dissatisfied with the cabinet's work. The escape of a large group of detainees from the Sukhumi detention ward on Monday morning was the final proof of inefficiency of the cabinet, especially its law-enforcement sector.
Georgian Minister without Portfolio Malkhaz Kakabadze told Interfax-AVN that "the situation in Abkhazia is complicated and unpredictable, tensions are growing more and more, and the opposition does not conceal its confrontation with the regime, which is evidenced by mass rallies in Sukhumi." In spite of official Abkhaz statements that the government crisis will not cause any escalations, the Georgian authorities are ready for any developments.
Bezhuashvili said that "the Defense Ministry considers it senseless to declare alert in Georgian army units located near the Abkhaz administrative border. The events on the territory controlled by separatists do not pose any threat to the country's security so far."
