U.S. actions in Iraq had mostly negative consequences - Russian lawmaker

MOSCOW. April 11 (Interfax-AVN) - U.S. actions in Iraq have more negative consequences than positive ones, Army General Anatoly Kulikov, former interior minister and current members of the security committee in the State Duma lower house of Russian parliament, told Interfax-Military News Agency on Friday.

"The victory won by the U.S. and Great Britain has its positive and negative points. There are much more negative ones," Kulikov said.

"The worst thing is that a precedent of solving problems by force was created. And there are no more guarantees that American allies, such as Israel and Turkey, will not solve the Palestinian and Kurdish problem the same way. It might cause tensions in the region," the lawmaker noted.

According to him, " outbreaks of terrorism cannot be ruled out, because centers of international terrorism have not been destroyed."

"It means that the possibility of new terrorist acts is high. This time terrorists can use not only the United States but also Great Britain and other countries somehow involved in the war, as their targets," Kulikov stressed.

Moreover, it is too early to speak about the full victory over Iraq.

"In spite of the seizure of Baghdad by anti-Iraqi coalition troops, it is too early to speak about the victory. The war must end with the signing of a document, for example, a capitulation act or with the capture of the Iraqi leader and his high-ranking officials or with the taking of power by a legitimate government. None of that has happened, though the Iraqi army has effectively stopped resistance, its main formations are destroyed, and troops of the anti-terrorist coalition have gained control over the major part of the country's territory," Kulikov said.

According to him, "the victory has been gained from the military and military-technical points of view."

It seems that the only positive result of the allies' actions is that "the USD80bn allocated by the U.S. Congress for the war might now be spent on restoring the country and relieving the economy of Iraq and the region in general," Kulikov added.
