Georgian Defense Ministry to help border guards strengthen protection of border with Russia

TBILISI. April 11 (Interfax-AVN) - The Georgian Defense Ministry and State Border Guard Department are working on a plan of joint actions on the Chechen and Ingush sections of the border with Russia, the department's chief-of-staff Colonel Kornely Salia told Interfax-Military News Agency on Friday.

"Under the plan, the army will become the second echelon of defense," Salia said.

He noted that the current situation on the border is calm but it might aggravate when the snow melts.

"That is why the relocation of additional border guard forces to the border will start in a few days," Salia stressed.

A source in the ministry said that a planned exercise will start near the Pankisi gorge in eastern Georgia soon. He did not disclose the theme of the exercise.
