TBILISI. April 14 (Interfax-AVN) - Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze estimates the current situation in Abkhazia as difficult, but hopes for the soonest peace settlement of the Georgian-Abkhaz conflict.
"The present-day situation in Abkhazia is difficult, but not unexpected," the president said on national radio on Monday.
Last week, the Abkhaz government resigned under pressure from the opposition, which was dissatisfied with its activities.
The Georgian president said he is closely watching developments in Sukhumi.
Shevardnadze said that in contrast to some Russian politicians, "well known in Tbilisi, such as Zatulin (Director of the Institute of CIS Countries Konstantin Zatulin - Interfax), who have swarmed on Abkhazia like flies," he retains the declared policy of a peaceful settlement and reconciliation.
The Georgian president hopes the conflict will be settled in the near future.
