Railway troops closely following flood situation in southern Russia

MOSCOW. April 15 (Interfax-AVN) - Operations bodies of the Federal Railway Troops Service are following the flood situation in southern Russia 24 hours a day to prevent any danger to railways, Lieutenant General Vyacheslav Bury, deputy commander of the railway troops, said on Tuesday.

"A special emergencies department in our troops' headquarters is following the flood situation in southern Russia 24 hours a day. Regular monitoring of the situation on southern railways is performed in close interaction with relevant services of the Railways Ministry," Bury told Interfax-Military News Agency.

Freshets in the Volgograd, Kursk and Voronezh regions do not threaten train service in that area, he said. "All freight and passenger trains are following the schedule in southern areas. However passenger trains are escorted by special railway troops teams several times a day," he noted.

The deputy commander said that railway troops units are engaged in repairs to prevent rockslides only on one section of the North Caucasus railway. "Bridge units of the 37th railway brigade under command of Major General Alexander Sobolev are strengthening river banks and repairing a railway bridge across the Podkumok River in the Stavropol territory," Bury said.
