Serviceman of Georgian Commandos battalion injured by artillery shell blast

TBILISI. April 15 (Interfax-AVN) - A serviceman of the Commandos battalion got serious injuries in the explosion of an artillery shell on Tuesday.

"The incident took place early in the morning at the Vaziani military base where the battalion is stationed," press secretary of the Georgian Defense Minister Nino Sturua told Interfax- Military News Agency.

"According to preliminary reports, the blast occurred due to careless handling of the shell's fuse. The injured person, Private Lukhumi Koshadze, was delivered to military hospital. Doctors consider his condition to be complicated," Sturua said.

According to her, the serviceman has been operated on several times. Doctors are trying to save his right hand.

The Commandos battalion is the first of four units being trained in Georgia by U.S. instructors in accordance with the USD64m-worth Train and Equip program.
