Russia will build new storage facility for spent nuclear fuel

MOSCOW. April 18 (Interfax-AVN) - A total of USD426m in investments are required to build a storage facility for spent nuclear fuel on the site of the RT-2 mining and chemical plant in the Krasnoyarsk territory, Mikhail Solonin, first deputy atomic energy minister, told journalists on Moscow on Friday.

Solonin said that the facility will store spent nuclear fuel removed from RBMK-1000 reactors. The first stage of the project is estimated at USD250m and operations are expected to start in 2010.

Commenting on Russia's export of uranium products, the official noted that "Russia is not selling natural uranium today. Only low-enriched uranium is exported," he said.

The main markets for Russian uranium products are Japan, the United States, South Korea and Europe.
