Agreement on nuclear environmental program for Russia may be signed on May 21

MOSCOW. April 21 (Interfax-AVN) - An agreement on the Multilateral Nuclear Environmental Program for the Russian Federation (MNEPR) may be signed in Stockholm on May 21. Foreign ministers from Russia and EU members and the U.S. secretary of state will attend the signing ceremony, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Vladimir Chizhov said.

At parliamentary hearings on "Russia's national interests and the record of international relations in Northern Europe" at the Federation Council on Monday, Chizhov noted that MNEPR envisions the allocation of funds to Russia for implementing environmental projects on disposing of decommissioned nuclear submarines stockpiled in the northwest.

The agreement can be signed if "U.S. obstacles" are dealt with by May 21, Chizhov said. He did not specify the obstacles in question.

In the future, this document could become a model for the countries located in northern Europe and for the European Union as a whole.
