Duma ratifies charter, legal status of Collective Security Treaty Organization

MOSCOW. April 25 (Interfax-AVN) - The Russian State Duma on Friday ratified the Charter of the Collective Security Treaty Organization, which was signed by Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Tajikistan in Chisinau on October 7, 2002.

"The signatories to the Collective Security Treaty Organization coordinate efforts in combating international terrorism and extremism, the trafficking of illegal drugs and psychotropic substances, organized trans-national crime and other threats to security," Russian First Deputy Foreign Minister Vyacheslav Trubnikov said at the Duma session.

"The Organization gives priority to political means of attaining its goals and will cooperate with other states that are not signatories to this alliance. Along with this, measures are being taken to set up coalition (regional) troops and provide them with personnel, arms and military hardware," Trubnikov said.

The Duma also ratified the agreement on the legal status of the Organization.
