MOSCOW. April 25 (Interfax-AVN) - Russia needs to dispose of its chemical weapons as soon as possible, Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov said on Friday.
"The quickest possible disposal of chemical weapons is in the interests of Russia. The sooner those weapons are disposed of the sooner we will be able to address tasks facing the ammunition industry," Ivanov said while introducing the new general director of the Russian Ammunition Agency, Colonel General Viktor Kholstov.
Nonproliferation of weapons of mass destruction is a global problem "that directly affects the security of Russia," Ivanov said.
He described the Ammunition Agency's new director as "a specialist of the highest standards who knows the tiniest details about chemical, radiation and biological security and defense."
