Ten rebels killed in Chechnya

GROZNY. April 28 (Interfax-AVN) - A unit of eight Chechen rebels has been eliminated over the past 24 hours.

An armed clash between a Russian army unit and a rebel group took place four kilometers west of the community of Malye Varandy in the Shatoi district, the press service of the Combined Federal Forces in the North Caucasus told Interfax on Monday.

The killed rebels are being identified at the moment. The army unit did not suffer any losses.

Another operation in which two Chechen rebels were killed was carried out in the community of Duba-Yurt in the Shali district.

The operation was launched after federal forces learned that rebels from a unit led by Yunusov were hiding out in a house in Duba-Yurt, spokesman for the regional operational headquarters for the anti-guerilla operation in the North Caucasus Colonel Ilya Shabalkin told Interfax. The rebels put up armed resistance and were eliminated, he said.

One of the killed guerillas was identified as a resident of Duba-Yurt, Shabalkin added.

Two Kalashnikov assault rifles, a large amount of explosives and ammunition, and a large number of grenades were seized on the scene of the engagement. The eliminated rebels carried notes and maps in their pockets confirming that they planned a terrorist act on the road section connecting Chiri-Yurt and the district center of Shali.
