MOSCOW. April 29 (Interfax-AVN) - An armed drug courier was destroyed on the Tajik-Afghan border overnight to Tuesday when he attempted to cross the Pyandzh River.
"An unidentified person who was getting across the Pyandzh River from Afghanistan to Tajikistan was detected by border guards of the Pyandzh detachment," the press center of the Federal Border Guard Service told Interfax-Military News Agency.
A press center official said that the border guards attempted to detain the violator, but he started firing back and was eventually killed. No border guards were injured in the crossfire.
"Border guards found a Kalashnikov assault rifle, a sack with six packs of heroin and four packs of unidentified powder near the violator's dead body," the official noted.
This year Russian border guards in Tajikistan have detained over 1,100kg of heroin against over 2,300kg in 2002.
