BRNO, Czech Republic. April 29 (Interfax-AVN) - Russia's Nudelman precise machine-building design bureau is exhibiting the PAPV portable laser device of optic and electronic counteraction at the IDET 2003 international weapons and security show that is underway in Brno, Nudelman director and chief constructor Oleg Korotkov said on Tuesday.
"The device has been commissioned by the Russian army, but the permission to demonstrate it has only been obtained recently. The device was exhibited abroad for the first time at the IDEX 2003 arms show in the United Arab Emirates, where it attracted interest among potential customers and experts. Such devices were not exhibited at international arms shows before," Korotkov told Interfax-Military News Agency.
PAPV uses an in-built laser locator to detect optic and electronic assets of a masked object such as sniper or anti-tank system that is engaged in surveillance and sighting. After the detection, the device's action laser suppresses the assets automatically through generating optical emission impulses in both visible and IR sections of the spectrum.
The device is distinguished for invisible and noiseless detection of optic and electronic assets of the asset engaged in surveillance and sighting, their immediate blinding and suppression, advanced selective action, non-lethal action, and short period of deployment at the position, Korotkov said. PAPV can be used both in the daytime and at night. Its maximal range is 1,500m.
The device is quite expensive. European nations such as Great Britain and Germany have ordered it in small batches. Sweden has also expressed interest in the asset.
