TBILISI. May 7 (Interfax-AVN) - Former head of the Georgian State Security Service Igor Georgadze will be arrested if he returns to his country, Prosecutor General Nuzgar Gabrichidze said on Wednesday.
The criminal case against Georgadze is not closed, the court has issued a warrant for his arrest, and he will be arrested in case he returns, Gabrichidze told reporters.
Georgadze is on the Interpol wanted list for involvement in the attempt on the life of Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze performed on August 29, 1995.
Georgadze's supporters in Georgia say he is ready to testify in case he is not taken in custody. In this case, the former security service chief will engage in politics and participate in parliamentary elections scheduled for November 2.
Panteleimon Georgadze, the father of the former security service chief, earlier said that his son is outside the CIS. He believes that his son might return "sometime in summer to participate in parliamentary elections in Georgia."
"Europe already admitted that Igor Georgadze is persecuted for political reasons but Georgia refuses to admit it due to its conceit. Almost everyone who was involved in the case is free now," the father stressed.
"Shevardnadze said that national reconciliation should be established in the country before the elections, and this will enable Igor to return," Panteleimon Georgadze noted.
According to him, Shevardnadze earlier suggested that Igor returned and gave evidence.
