MOSCOW. May 7 (Interfax-AVN) - Border guards on the Russian- Kazakh frontier fired warning shots to stop a KamAZ truck loaded with contraband, the press center of the Russian Federal Border Guard Service said on Wednesday.
"In order to stop the vehicle for examination at a section of the Troitsk border guard detachment stationed on the Russian- Kazakh border, servicemen had to fire several warning shots from an AK-74 assault rifle and a special-purpose pistol," the press center told Interfax-Military News Agency.
The vehicle that arrived from Kazakhstan was carrying smuggled household goods worth a total of about RUB1m (USD32,150). The driver managed to escape. Measures are being taken in cooperation with the Interior Ministry to identify the owner and driver of the vehicle.
The press center also said that 27 abandoned sacks with household goods worth about RUB1m (USD32,150) have been found on the border section controlled by the Ishim detachment. The contraband was handed over to customs officials.
In the past month alone, smuggled goods were seized about 100 times on the Russian-Kazakh border. Their cost amounted to about USD295,210.
