GROZNY. May 8 (Interfax-South) - The Chechen police will be on alert on May 9-11 in connection with Victory Day celebrations, and all key facilities in Grozny and other towns will be guarded, Chechnya's military commandant Lieutenant General Yevgeny Abrashin told Interfax on Thursday.
The most important crossroads and thoroughfares in the capital are patrolled around the clock, he said. Security has also been tightened at the Dinamo stadium, where the Chechen leadership and military will attend an anniversary ceremony.
On May 9 last year, two shots were fired from a grenade- launcher at the stadium, wounding one policeman. The entire Chechen leadership was at the stadium at the time. To prevent such occurrences, the surrounding territory and neighboring half- destroyed buildings are being monitored.
At the same time, Abrashin stressed that everything has been done to allow the people of Chechnya to travel freely and visit their friends and relatives.
"Grozny and all towns and villages remain open. Roadblocks are functioning as usual, checking suspicious vehicles," Abrashin said.
