Over 10 killed in army vehicle explosions in Chechnya last week

KHANKALA. May 12 (Interfax-AVN) - Rebels blew up 19 automobiles and armored vehicles in Chechnya during the week ending on Sunday, killing over 10 people, a source at headquarters of the federal force in the North Caucasus told Interfax-Military News Agency.

"Last week, sappers neutralized over 100 explosive devices and prevented three explosions on railways and one bridge explosion," he said.

Positions of federal forces came under fire 27 times.

"Fourteen rebels were killed in clashes with army units. The exchanges of fire took place in the Grozny, Vedeno and Nozhai- Yurt districts," the source said.

Participants in search and reconnaissance operations destroyed two guerilla mobile camps and a transmitter and blew up seven dug-outs. They detected six arms and ammo caches. A portable air defense missile system was found in a cache in Grozny.

"Rebels have scaled up activity lately, they are recruiting youth for their gangs and collecting armament, ammunition, medicines and food," the source said.
