MOSCOW. May 23 (Interfax-AVN) - U.S. troops will hopefully be active in Central Asia only as long as the anti-terrorist operation in Afghanistan is underway, Nikolai Bordyuzha, secretary general of the Collective Security Council, told a news conference at the Interfax main office.
At the moment, Russia and other member nations of the Collective Security Treaty Organization are not worried over the presence of U.S. troops in Central Asia, he said.
"The U.S. units provide stability in Afghanistan. We welcome this activity," Bordyuzha said.
Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Tajikistan, member countries of the Collective Security Treaty Organization, "are prepared to cooperate with the units active in the region on behalf of NATO and European countries" in tackling the Afghan problem, he said.
The situation in Afghanistan is far from stable "as Taliban structures are tending to act more aggressively and consolidate, while other groups opposing the central government of Afghanistan have also stepped up their activities," Bordyuzha said.
