Federal aircraft bombing rebel bases in Chechen mountains

KHANKALA. May 26 (Interfax-AVN) - Federal aviation has increased the number of sorties aimed at inflicting strikes on rebel bases and amassment areas, a source in the headquarters of the Combined Federal Forces told Interfax-Military News Agency on Monday.

"SU-24 Fencer frontline bombers and SU-25 Frogfoot attack planes have accomplished 68 combat missions in Chechnya in the past two weeks," the source said.

"Missile and bomb strikes were inflicted on rebel bases and camps in mountainous areas in the south of the republic," he said.

According to the source, "MI-8 Hip, MI-24 Hind and MI-26 Halo helicopters have flown over 1,200 sorties in Chechnya in the past two weeks, delivering landing parties, transporting cargo and personnel, conducting reconnaissance, evacuating sick and wounded persons."
