Baku denies joining anti-Iran coalition

BAKU. May 29 (Interfax-Azerbaijan) - Baku has denied press reports that Azerbaijan may join a possible U.S. operation in Iran.

"The press reports that Azerbaijan is allegedly ready to join a possible U.S. operation in Iran are not true. This information comes from certain forces which are interested in escalating tension in relations between Azerbaijan and Iran," head of the president staff's external relations department Novruz Mamedov told Interfax on Thursday.

He noted that the presidents of Azerbaijan and Iran had signed a treaty, "one provision of which clearly prohibits the use of the nations' territories by third countries for actions against either of the two countries."

He also noted that Baku had not received "a message from Iran saying that Teheran reserves the right to carry out a preventive strike on Azerbaijan if the latter agrees to allow American military bases to be stationed on its national territory."

It was reported on Thursday that the Pentagon had drafted a plan for a military strike on Iran using the territories of Iraq, Georgia and Azerbaijan as a bridgehead for the assault.
