STAVROPOL. June 2 (Interfax-AVN) - Border guards of the North Caucasus regional directorate have found a Shmel flame- thrower and a few mortar shells in Chechnya, the directorate's press service told Interfax-Military News Agency on Monday.
A search and reconnaissance team of the Argun border guard detachment found three 82mm mortar shells in the Chechen territory. The dangerous find was neutralized. Another border guard team has found a secreted Shmel flame-thrower. Sappers destroyed it on the spot by blasting it.
This year the regional directorate's servicemen have found and destroyed about 40 rebel caches with about ten pieces of various weapons, over 30 grenades, about 800 grenade discharger rounds and 54,000 cartridges on various sections of the Russian- Georgian border.
"The border situation in the North Caucasus regional directorate's zone of responsibility did not change essentially this weekend. Additional measures on strengthening the border were taken according to plan, including on the Chechen and adjacent border sections. Combat and reconnaissance operations for destroying guerilla bases and caches were conducted," the press-service said.
A few violators were detained this weekend on the Russian- Kazakhstan border sections controlled by the Astrakhan border guard detachment and the Aksaraysk-Zheleznodorozhny border control department.
