Amnesty may apply to over 200 rebels in confinement - Kremlin aide

MOSCOW. June 6 (Interfax-AVN) - The amnesty announced by the Russian State Duma on Friday may apply to over 200 Chechen rebels currently serving prison terms or expecting trial.

At a Friday news conference, presidential aide Sergei Yastrzhembsky quoted tentative reports as saying that 179 persons at pre-trial detention centers and 30 inmates of corrective institutions may be amnestied.

He said the amnesty also applies to Russian servicemen who committed various offenses in Chechnya. "According to the count of the military prosecutor's office, up to 200 servicemen may be amnestied," he said.
