ASTANA. June 9 (Interfax-AVN) - Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov has suggested creating an interstate structure to control issues relating to the sale of mobile surface-to-air missile systems.
"It is necessary to create a mechanism to control the transportation of this dangerous type of weapons abroad. I mean the export and import of mobile surface-to-air missile systems," Ivanov told reporters upon arriving in Astana on Sunday.
Ivanov said there have been cases when such systems fell into the hands of terrorists and were used for attacking civil aircraft. "It is not without reason that the G-8 leaders also raised this issue at the state level in Evian this year," he said.
Ivanov said that during his visit to Kazakhstan he is planning to "discuss the whole range of issues between our defense ministries."
