ASTANA. June 9 (Interfax-AVN) - The U.S. is planning to redeploy its military bases in certain regions of the world, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov has said.
Washington "is mulling over redeployment of a number of the U.S. armed forces' units to other regions of the world," Ivanov said at a press briefing in Astana on Sunday.
"The matter concerns not so much Europe as the Far East," he said.
Ivanov confirmed that the U.S. is considering redeployment of a number of its military bases in Europe, "but I have never heard the Baltic states to be mentioned in this context."
The U.S. is planning to regroup "so-called light ammunition bases, primarily support ones," which is "prompted by the threat of international terrorism," he said.
"The U.S. has not so far made any decisions on this issue," and "I have not heard concrete statements on this score," he said.
Ivanov said he had discussed possible redeployment of U.S.' bases with his American colleagues during his latest visit to Washington. "Consultations on this issue are being held, particularly within NATO," he said.
