Georgia to consult on involving EU police forces in settling internal conflicts

TBILISI. June 9 (Interfax-AVN) - Georgia will hold consultations with the European Union leadership concerning the settlement of conflicts in the country's territory.

"The consultations will deal with the problem of settling the conflicts in the Georgian territory, in particular, the European Union's willingness to take more active part in this process," Georgian Ambassador to the European Union and the Benelux countries Konstantin Zaldastanishvili told Interfax- Military News Agency on Monday.

"Georgia intends to probe into the possibility of involving the European Union police forces in settling Georgian internal conflicts," he said.

Zaldastanishvili refrained from commenting on possible outcomes of the consultations.

"A lot of discussions on methods and formats of using police forces are underway in the European Union, and it is difficult to forecast the result of negotiations," he said.

Georgia is planning to apply to the EU for the appointment of an envoy for settlement of conflicts on the country's territory, Zaldastanishvili added.
