Damba shore-based anti-commando system to be exhibited at naval show in St. Petersburg

TULA. June 9 (Interfax-AVN) - Splav, a state producer of military hardware, will present the DP-62 Damba self-propelled shore-based anti-commando MLRS at the International Maritime Defense Show in St. Petersburg on June 25-29, 2003.

"The DP-62 Damba shore-based MLRS has been specially designed to effectively counter small submarines, SEALs, and other threat forces for protecting naval and civilian ships and vessels in bay and port throats, and in other concentration areas of surface and submerged ships," Sergei Malevsky, deputy chief of Splav's foreign economic ties center, told Interfax-Military News Agency Monday.

The Grad-based MLRS can operate both independently and as part of the shore defense system with a hydroacoustic station.

Damba has 40 launchers that can be engaged separately, in a partial or in a full salvo. A full salvo is fired within 20 seconds. At a range of fire of 300m to 5,000m, a submerged commando is hit by a half-salvo to a probability of 0.99.

"The system allows one to hit the enemy with all the firepower in a few seconds," Malevsky emphasized.

The system uses HE 122-mm PRS-60 rockets with a mechanical proximity fuse. The rockets have an underwater capability of 200m. The weight of a rocket is 73.5kg, including 20kg of payload.

Experts say Damba gives any country a capability to control long seashore border areas.
