FSB SOp fighters getting new close engagement weapons

MOSCOW. June 10 (Interfax-AVN) - Close engagement weapons for the Federal Security Service are developed by the Central High-Precision Machine-Building Research Institute (TsNIITochMash).

"Several unique weapons systems have recently been designed by TsNIITochMash to meet our requirements. Some of them have already been commissioned for use by SOp teams," Sergei Medvetsky, a senior official with the FSB Research Department, told Interfax-Military News Agency Tuesday.

Some of these are the SR-1 self-loading pistol, SR-2 machine pistol, SR-3 compact assault rifle, and other close engagement weapons.

The SR-1 self-loading 9-mm pistol penetrates an armor jacket at a distance of up to 50m. To prevent accidental shooting, there are two safety devices, one on the rear of the grip and the other on the trigger, so that they both go off as the pistol is ready to shoot. The SR-1 is produced by the Mayak plant in Kirov.

The SR-2 9-mm machine pistol penetrates an armor jacket at a distance of up to 200m. The dioptric sight has two presets for distances of 100 and 200m. The weapon is produced by TsNIITochMash itself.

The SR-3 has a folding butt like the SR-2 and the same range of fire. It is compact enough to conceal on a person and rapidly open fire. The assault rifle is produced by the Tula Weapons Plant.

According to Medvetsky, these and other anti-terrorist assets were shown at the 5th VTTV-Omsk 2003 armsshow in Omsk, Russia, which ended last week.
