Russian military, UN observers discuss Abkhaz settlement

MOSCOW. June 17 (Interfax-AVN) - Russian top brass and UN officials have met in Moscow to discuss settlement of the Georgian-Abkhaz conflict.

"The negotiations between Lieutenant General Valery Yevnevich, deputy commander-in-chief of the Land Forces for peacekeeping troops, the UN Secretary General's Special Representative for Georgia Heidi Tagliavini, and Marian Staszewski, Senior Political Advisor at the UN Observer Mission in Georgia (UNOMIG), addressed possible measures aimed at relieving tensions in the conflict area," Colonel Yakov Firsov, chief of the Land Forces press service, told Interfax-Military News Agency on Tuesday.

"The UN representatives noted that the recent incident when UN officials were kidnapped in the Kodori Gorge shows the political situation in Georgia has aggravated to a certain extent, which reflects on the effectiveness of efforts made by the UN mission and the CIS Collective Peacekeeping Forces in the conflict area," he said.

According to him, participants in the talks proposed that the parties to the conflict visited the Balkans and studied settlement practices used in the region.

The UN representatives said that the mission was working in close contact with Lieutenant General Alexander Yevteyev, commander of the Collective Peacekeeping Forces.

"Tagliavini and Staszewski said mission officials find understanding and support in the Collective Peacekeeping Forces Command that provides maximum assistance to attaining the mission's goals," Firsov said.
