Tbilisi calls for mixed administration under aegis of UN in Gali district

TBILISI. June 18 (Interfax-AVN) - Georgia has suggested creating a mixed administration under the aegis of the UN in the Gali district of Abkhazia, Georgian Ambassador to Russia Zurab Abashidze told Interfax on Wednesday.

This administration could include Georgians living in the Gali district and Abkhaz people, Abashidze said, referring to the results of the Georgian-Russian consultations on the return of refugees to Abkhazia held in Moscow on Tuesday.

"Tbilisi also believes this proposal is a compromise," the ambassador said, adding that Abkhazia should be willing to compromise, too.

If a mixed administration is set up in the Gali district, its security will be ensured by Russian peacekeepers, who have been in the conflict area since 1994 under the aegis of the CIS.

In addition to the proposal to create a mixed administration in the district, Georgia made other suggestions to promote the return of refugees to the area, he said.

The ambassador said that, in accordance with the agreements reached by the presidents of the two countries, the return of refugees to the Gali district will take place simultaneously with the restoration of railway communication through Abkhazia.

The next meeting between Georgian and Russian experts and UN officials on the return of refugees to the Gali district will be held in Tbilisi in late June.
